Support the future of Opal
Opal Med Apps Foundation’s mission
The Opal Health Informatics Group is a research group at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC). We develop and operate Opal non-commercially under a free open-source license for public benefit. We rely on philanthropy and research grants to keep Opal going.
We are currently creating Opal Med Apps Foundation as a Canadian charitable organization. Opal Med App Foundation’s mission will be to independently manage the official version of Opal as an open-source patient-in-the-loop data platform for public benefit. It will ensure that Opal meets the needs of patients into the future while being competitive with the commercial alternatives that are driven by profit rather than by patients.
If you share our vision that all patients should have access to all of their data all of the time and you would like to support a charitable organization that actively strives to achieve this vision, please reach out to us at opal@muhc.mcgill.ca.
We are currently seeking help in the form of financial donations and legal advice.

A truly patient-driven initiative
Since 2018, the Opal patient-in-the-loop data platform has been providing patients with access to their medical data at the MUHC. As of fall 2024, Opal remains the only patient portal at a Quebec hospital.

Feedback shows that Opal is valued enormously by the people who use it. But patient portals are not yet funded as the standard-of-care in Quebec and Opal is not an officially-supported application at the MUHC. Therefore, we need your help to keep Opal going.
